Jazz at Dada - The Sweet Corner Trio

Wes Maples (tenor saxophone), Carlo De Biaggio (electric bass) and Rob Mitzner (drums) unite to form The Sweet Corner Trio, playing jazz favorites, sultry bossa novas and modern funk classics. Based in New York City, the band’s influences run the gamut from traditional jazz titans Sonny Rollins and Miles Davis to artists like The Meters and Maceo Parker. Equally at ease playing festival stages or small venues, the band’s warm sound and engaging live performances have made it one of the most in-demand units in town.

The band holds a twice-weekly residency at All & Sundry on Manhattan’s Upper West Side, performing every Saturday and Monday. They also appear regularly at The Williamsburg Hotel and at private events throughout the New York metro area. As individuals, they have shared the stage with some of the biggest names in jazz and soul such as Donny McCaslin, Dave Liebman, Leo Genovese, Jerry Bergonzi, Oz Noy, The Sam Kininger Band and DJ Maseo (De La Soul).

Saxophonist Maples hails from Yakima, WA and graduated Summa Cum Laude from The Berklee College of Music where he studied with masters such as George Garzone and Frank Tiberi. In recent years, he has toured internationally with funk artist Milo Z, opening for legends like Sly & The Family Stone, Bernie Worrell (Parliament Funkadelic), Leo Nocentelli (The Meters) and trombonist Fred Wesley (James Brown). Maples is also an accomplished vinyl DJ and possesses an encyclopedic knowledge of classic jazz and soul records. His soaring melodies and boundless musical drive are an integral part of the Sweet Corner Trio’s sound.

A native of Udine, Italy, bassist De Biaggio moved to the United States to study at The Berklee College of Music, apprenticing with luminaries such as James Genus, Fernando Huergo and Whit Browne. After relocating to New York, he quickly became one of the most in-demand bassists in town, performing with Oz Noy, GlaucoVenier, Niu Raza, Ed From Space, Donny McCaslin and legendary David Bowie producer Tony Visconti. Equally proficient on the acoustic and electric basses, his musical journey has included stops at the Umbria Jazz Festival, Boston Symphony Hall and tours throughout the United States and Europe. He also recently appeared as a bassist in the feature film “Mrs. Booker on 8th Avenue. As the main “chordal” instrument in The Sweet Corner Trio, De Biaggio contributes an infectious groove and boundless harmonic creativity to the band’s musical palette.

Drummer Mitzner originally hails from Washington D.C and attended Brown University, where he holds a B.A. in music and political science. He has recorded for Billboard Top-10 charting albums, films, and Broadway shows, performing at venues such as Lincoln Center, The Smithsonian, Caesar’s Palace, The Blue Note, Boston Symphony Hall and for President Obama in Washington D.C. He recently released the best-selling book “Drumming in a Band: Stuff You Can Use” through publisher Hudson Music. He has been featured in national publications such as Downbeat magazine and Modern Drummer, and his credits include over 60 commercially available albums across many genres. Rob is also a proud endorser of some of the world’s top drum companies, including Paiste Cymbals, Vic Firth, Remo, Low Boy Custom Beaters and Drumdots. His rhythmic innovation and relentless drive serves as the heartbeat of the Sweet Corner Trio’s musical explorations.
