This Friday at Dada in Ridgewood will see the gathering of diverse NYC-based experimental/leftfield musicians Jacob Becker, Mersa, and the premiere of a collaboration between SPARQL (Ryan Woodhall of Yellow Tears/Halflings) and composer Luke Moldof, along with atmospheric selections by Houston-born NYC-based DJ Nihal Ramchandani.
SPARQL is a solo project of NYC-based experimental musician Ryan Woodhall (also of Yellow Tears/Halflings). SPARQL's cinematic soundscapes are influenced by his work in commercial sound design, and in a live setting, he incorporates custom software, handmade controllers, and digital synthesis. For this performance, he’ll be accompanied by Luke Moldof on Pedal Steel guitar.
Mersa is a Queens, NY-based experimental electronic music duo formed in 2015 consisting of members Marshall Stacks and Diego Cohen. Crafting their sound through a continually evolving process of spontaneous live improvisation filtered through a unique style of editing and arrangement, Mersa recently released their debut self-titled album on Iowa-based experimental electronic label Liminal Ennui and is currently working on their follow-up album, as well as a double-live album/concert film.
Jacob Becker is an NYC based musician, whose artistic practice blends sound design and composition, stacking samples to tease out unexpected musical logics. An expansive palette of sonic fragments culled from a variety of archival sources, combined with heavily manipulated recorded instrumental and vocal sounds, form the basis of his work.
Influenced by the maximalist production techniques of the Bomb Squad and Skinny Puppy, Becker also counts electro-acoustic composer John Wall and sampling pioneer Carl Stone as key influences, with the work of Todd Edwards and Disco Inferno also providing inspiration.
